OPINION| Lawrence David| Fox News invested a lot of money to bring former Congressman Trey Gowdy (R-SC) on board for his knowledge of the Russia collusion hoax… among other things.
Gowdy was a member of the House Intelligence Committee (HPSCI) from January 2017 until January 2019 when he retired from Congress. During that time, the committee’s chairman, Devin Nunes (R-CA) exposed the falsity behind the attempt to remove a duly elected president.
Nunes appointed Gowdy, along with John Ratcliffe (R-TX), to be the two Republican members of the committee to view all of the classified evidence.
Ratcliffe was confirmed as President Trump’s Director of National Intelligence yesterday… Gowdy is now a Fox News contributor. The question is why?
Why did Ratcliffe immediately realize the Russia collusion investigation was a ruse to remove President Trump because he was a threat to the status quo… the establishment’s stranglehold on policies that gave their benefactors access to Americans’ tax dollars?
And why didn’t Gowdy, by every account a brilliant attorney, come to the same conclusions that Ratcliffe did? They must’ve compared notes frequently… Gowdy even referred to Ratcliffe as “Johnny” on various shows.
Looking back, Gowdy was a brilliant interrogator but he always stopped short of making criminal referrals… Always.
We also learned from fellow committee member Matt Gaetz (R-FL) that Gowdy denied his fellow Republicans on the HPSCI subpoena power when they needed it to defend the president and silence the false Trump-Russia allegations.
Tucker Carlson brought Gowdy on his show this past week to give the valuable Fox “property” a chance to rehabilitate his image that has taken a beating lately:
Tucker: “[This was] driven by the Obama administration. But it was allowed to metastasize because the Republican-controlled Congress did not stop it.”
Gowdy changes the subject to what Obama knew. Juicy stuff but if he’s going to point to the Susan Rice email when he raises that question, maybe he should explain why he didn’t demand then ex-President Obama, or his National Security Advisor Susan Rice be subpoenaed?
After all, Gowdy told Carlson’s audience that he had seen the redacted paragraph. He knew… or should have known immediately that there had been a conspiracy against President Trump’s incoming National Security Advisor, Lt. General Michael Flynn.
Gowdy goes on…
“For Russia… I think Devin Nunes did a phenomenal job… he wrapped up his investigation a lot quicker than [special counsel] Bob Mueller did, and with a lot less help from the witnesses.”
So why did Gowdy block giving Nunes subpoena power?
Tucker gave Gowdy one additional chance to resurrect his standing with conservatives…
“You were briefed in 2018 by the FBI, and shortly after that briefing you came on this channel to describe your reaction… (Tucker plays the video clip from that interview)
Gowdy: “As of now I think Chris Wray and Rosenstein are stunned whenever people that Trump is the target of the investigation.”
Later, when confronted with that clip by Martha Maccallum, Gowdy responded…
“I am more convinced that the FBI did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do…”
After playing those two clips, Tucker asks Gowdy if he still feels that way…
Gowdy: “Gosh no! I made a lot of mistakes… like relying on briefings and not insisting on the documents.”
Why in the world did Gowdy think Nunes gave him the responsibility of reviewing the classified documents if not to review them?
As we established earlier, Gowdy is a brilliant prosecutor. This wasn’t even a rookie mistake.
From where we sit… more than a year after Nunes launched the Spygate probe, Gowdy knew it was a sham, an attempt to destroy the Trump presidency… if not by July 2017, then shortly thereafter.
Gowdy was still alibiing for the FBI, FBI Director Chris Wray, and acting Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, in 2018. Why?
“I made a mistake” doesn’t cut it.
