Opinion| ICYMI| With all the bad news out there right now, we found a story that will remind you that there are plenty of great Americans out there … and even in New York ????
Mario Salerno, who owns a neighborhood garage in Williamsburg Brooklyn and 80 apartments which house over 200 tenants, just became a local legend.
The man, now dubbed ‘Super Mario’ has announced that he will be waving the rent for all of the people living in his properties this April.
‘We just want to make sure we are all healthy’ Mario told New York’s NBC Channel 4 news.
‘I have been having, since the last ten days, a lot of tenants, worried, crying, complaining, they can’t pay, and uh, losing their jobs.’ Super Mario told the camera.
‘For me it was more important, the people’s health, and worrying about who could put food on whose table. I had tenants who said they can’t work, they didn’t have money to pay me.
I says, don’t worry about paying me. Worry about your neighbor, worry about your family.’ Salerno stated.
‘It’s not about being cool, it’s about people’s health and I would hope other people could pass this down.
I have my roots here and I’m not not really worried about winning or losing anything. I just worried about the people’s health.’
Mario posted a note on the doors of his buildings that reads:
‘Due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 affecting all of us, please note I am waving the rent for the month of April, 2020.
Stay safe, help your neighbors & wash your hands!!!’
Thank you, Mario’
