Spain is set to announce an Italian-style countrywide lockdown Saturday after a dramatic spike in coronavirus cases.
Ahead of the announcement, airplanes on their way to the Iberian Peninsula dramatically turned around midair. Low-cost airline Jet2, which is based at nine airports in the United Kingdom, halted all fights with immediate effect to mainland Spain after the country saw cases rise by more than 1,500 to more than 5,700. Spain is just one of the many nations that is closing their borders due to the global pandemic and putting in domestic restrictions to slow the spread of the virus. The main issue is that the arrogance of people not taking the issue seriously, aids in spreading the virus even faster.
Fox News went on to report that residents in Madrid and northeast Catalonia woke up Saturday to shuttered bars and restaurants while other nonessential commercial outlets were closed by regional authorities.
The Madrid government told Spaniards to stay home except to buy food or medicine, go to the hospital, go to work or other emergencies.
The El Pais provided the decree that Spain is releasing: The draft version of the decree implementing the state of alarm could still be altered by the Spanish Cabinet. But according to the document, to which radio network Cadena SER first reported on and to which EL PAÍS has had access, limits journeys to the following:
1. The acquisition of foods, pharmaceuticals and essential items.
2. Access to healthcare centers.
3. Journeys to workplaces or to carry out labor, professional or company duties
4. Return journeys to habitual residences.
5. Assistance for and care of seniors, minors, dependents, the disabled or especially vulnerable people.
6. Journeys to financial institutions.
7. For reasons of force majeure or situations of necessity.
8. Any other activity that is justifiably necessary.
To sum up, people in Spain will only be able to move around if they need to go to work, buy foodstuffs or purchase pharmaceuticals. The government would essentially be locking down Spain, in measures that could go into force at 8am on Monday March 16, 2020.
Very similar situation to other nations and we can expect things to get even tighter as the virus progresses, as in all things, it will get worse before it gets better but as President Trump stated, we will unite as one people and we will defeat this pandemic.
