Based on what we’ve seen thus far in the news, George Floyd should not have died on the streets of Minneapolis with a police officer’s knee straddling his neck.
There’s no doubt we’re going to learn more about why fired officer Derek Chauvin and three others with him on the call earlier this month pinned Floyd to the ground and kept him there since the four of them have been charged with crimes involving the death.
But barring anything explosive that we don’t yet know, it sure looks like at least Chauvin is going to have to do some prison time for his actions, as he’s been charged with murder.
However, having said all of that, does the behavior of a handful of cops necessitate the dismissal of the entire Minneapolis police force?
It does if you’re a race-baiting U.S. lawmaker named Ilhan Omar.
The freshman Democrat is calling for just that — the elimination of the entire Minneapolis department — following the Floyd death.
The Minneapolis Police Department has proven themselves beyond reform.

The congresswoman tagged the account of Minneapolis City Council member Steve Fletcher, who has rallied the City Council to support disbanding the police department. The motion to defund the police has recently gained wide support, with a number of celebrities signing an online petition.
The movement began in connection with nationwide protests of the death of George Floyd, who died in Minneapolis after a police officer kneeled on his neck during an arrest.
‘Several of us on the council are working on finding out, what it would take to disband the MPD and start fresh with a community-oriented, non-violent public safety and outreach capacity,’ Fletcher said in a tweet Tuesday.
‘The whole world is watching, and we can declare policing as we know it a thing of the past, and create a compassionate, non-violent future,’ he added. ‘It will be hard. But so is managing a dysfunctional relationship with an unaccountable armed force in our city.’
Now, to be fair, these calls to disband the MPD come after another police-involved murder in 2017. Then, Officer Mohamed Noor shot and killed Justine Ruszczyk, a white Australian woman who moved to the city to get married.

And oh, by the way, he is Somalian. Yet, for some reason, we didn’t hear much from Omar about that did we? No calls to disband the MPD after that murder, huh? And it was murder; Noor was sentenced to nearly 13 years in prison on a third-degree murder charge.
The problem isn’t that Minneapolis has a police department. Without one, Minneapolis would truly become like Somalia — lawless, barren, violent, murderous, and failed.
The problem appears to be with the training regimen of the department and the Democrats on the City Council who have run it for decades.
