McConnell Counters Pelosi On Senate Impeachment Witnesses With Threat To Call Hunter Biden
The Democrats aren’t going to come out ahead on this…
By Tank Murdoch
(TNS) For weeks after she refused to send two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump to the Senate, as required by the Constitution, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) thought she was ‘in charge of things’ and was going to set the rules for the GOP-controlled Senate on how the trial would proceed.
She was demanding “a fair trial,” without really saying what that meant. She wanted Democrats to help craft the rules in a chamber they don’t control after altering and ignoring rules in the House they do control in order to return a couple of bogus articles that don’t even contain any violations of the law.
And she, along with her Senate Democrat colleagues, was demanding “witnesses” — chiefly, President Trump’s former national security adviser John Bolton.
Along came Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).
After swatting Pelosi away and garnering support from all 53 Republicans in his chamber that the Trump impeachment model would follow that used for Bill Clinton in the late 1990s, McConnell successfully made Pelosi’s political stunt look so silly members of her own party were publicly calling for her to send the articles to the Senate, already, and let’s get on with it.
But…but…witnesses! ‘We want John Bolton!’
First, according to the Clinton impeachment model, there may be an opportunity to hear from more witnesses after the case is presented by House managers. Oh, and if Pelosi and Democrats get to vote on calling witnesses, well, so will Republicans.
And that may put Hunter Biden front and center.
After all, Trump was impeached, ostensibly, for a “quid pro quo” involving the president’s alleged ‘demand’ that Ukraine investigate corruption tied to both Joe and Hunter Biden (Trump never asked and, in fact, specifically said he wanted “nothing” from Ukraine).
Nevertheless, as The Hill notes:
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) says Republicans could subpoena Hunter Biden to testify about his business dealings with a Ukrainian gas company if Democrats insist on having witnesses such as former national security adviser John Bolton testify at the Senate impeachment trial.
“We’ll be dealing with the witness issue at the appropriate time into the trial, and I think it’s certainly appropriate to point out that both sides would want to call witnesses that they wanted to hear from,” McConnell told reporters Tuesday when asked about GOP senators who want Hunter Biden, former Vice President Joe Biden’s son, to testify.
“When you get to that issue, I can’t imagine that only the witnesses that our Democratic colleagues would want to call would be called,” he said.
Sounds like Mitch McConnell is hinting at calling Hunter / Joe Biden if Dems call witnesses.

In fact, Sen. Rand Paul, McConnell’s junior colleague from Kentucky, said that’s a certainty.
“My colleagues can’t have it both ways. Calling for some, while blocking others. If we are going to give a platform to witnesses the Dems demand, I look forward to forcing votes to call Hunter Biden and many more!” Paul tweeted.
Popcorn, anyone?
