New Yorkers continue to see the ineptitude of their Democrat leaders that, hopefully, they’ll remember when they go to the polls in November.
After botching the coronavirus response which led to thousands of needless nursing home deaths and the closure of businesses that left many on the brink of economic collapse, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio have been warring with each other over their pathetic responses to riots that are only loosely related to the death of Minneapolis man George Floyd at this point.
Specifically, Cuomo blasted de Blasio earlier this week, calling his response to the riots a “disgrace,” adding that he has the authority to actually remove the mayor.
“He dishonored the men and women of the NYPD in an absolutely inappropriate way for any leader to do,” de Blasio said during a press conference Tuesday, demanding that Cuomo apologize.
“Any elected official who blames the NYPD while they were out there fighting in the streets to restore order, protect people – that’s disgraceful,” de Blasio said.
‘He owes an apology to 36,000 hardworking men and women who have been putting their lives on the line for all of us.”
Okay. Fair enough.
But then de Blasio announced on Sunday, just four days later, that he would be succumbing to Left-wing extremists who are using the Floyd incident as the latest opportunity to eliminate more resistance to future lawlessness by ‘defunding the police.’

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that New York City will shift funding from the police department to youth services.
De Blasio unveiled a few reforms to the New York Police Department on Sunday at the urging of a task force on racial inclusion, of which his wife is co-chairwoman.
‘We will be moving funding from the NYPD to youth initiatives and social services,’ the mayor said at a press conference.
“The details will be worked out in the budget process in the weeks ahead. But I want people to understand that we are committed to shifting resources to ensure that the focus is on our young people,” he added. “I also will affirm we will only do it in a way that is certain to continue the city will be safe.”
Other reforms include changing a law on disciplinary records for police officers, hiring ‘community ambassadors’ who will act as liaisons between the police force and civilians, and having a civilian agency deal with street vendor enforcement.
The NYPD’s budget in 2019 was almost $6 billion, but the department — the largest metro PD in the country — has to ‘manage’ a population of nearly 8 million people (which is liable to decline once the coronavirus business closures and riots take their toll). So the money’s justified.
It’s hard to say how much de Blasio’s cuts will be, but Comptroller Scott Stringer wants $1.1 billion cut from the department’s budget over the next four years.
Gee — do you think fewer police officers on NYC streets will embolden or deter violence and rioting?
