House Republicans voted Wednesday to remove Rep. Liz Cheney from the No. 3 spot in the party’s leadership, and she vowed to work to prevent former President Donald Trump from getting the 2024 nomination, USA Features reports.
The Wyoming Republican fell out of grace with GOP House leaders over the past several weeks due to her continued criticism of Trump’s 2020 election claims as well as her opposition to the party’s increased focus on working-class voters.
“I will do everything I can to ensure that the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office,” Cheney said following the vote, adding that the “nation needs a strong Republican Party … based on the principles of conservatism.”

“I plan to lead the fight to do that,” she said.
House Republicans plan to hold a vote to replace Cheney though it’s not clear when it will come. The reported favorite is Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York; she has been endorsed by Trump and publicly backed by GOP leaders including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California and Minority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana.
Earlier, McCarthy said that his opposition to Cheney was not premised on her vote to impeach Trump following the Capitol riot in January, but because of her opposition to the party’s political objectives and focus.
“It had been my hope that our driving focus would be taking back the House in 2022 and implementing our Commitment to America,” McCarthy said in a letter May 10 to House Republicans.
“Despite the mainstream media working overtime against us, I believe we still have a great chance to do so. Unfortunately, each day spent relitigating the past is one day less we have to seize the future,” he added.
